Native Elements is one of the hardest-working groups on the local reggae scene, having played to dancing throngs from San Francisco’s Reggae in the Park to Humboldt County’s Reggae on the River. As with their debut CD, “Nice n’ Up,” and 2002’s “For the Love,” the group emphasizes uplifting original songs and dance beats that integrate strains of dub, R&B, hip-hop, and jazz. www.native-elements.com
Named by SF Weekly “One of California’s finest reggae bands,” Dub FX is a Bay Area-based reggae-dub ensemble whose players mix some of the most bass-heavy reggae traditions with guitars, a four-member horn section, and turntables. They feature Mustapha Craig as lead vocalist, with fellow singers Dale Mungaray (alto sax) and Paul Dawson (keyboards) and Justin Cosgrove (bass), along with drummer Scott Maddern, lead guitarist Andy VanDoren, tenor saxophonist Ken Schick, trombonist Tony Lanzino, trumpeter Tom Maitlan, keyboardist Dan Shafer, and turntablist Travis “DJ Pone” Ramondo. www.dubfx.com
Faya plays “R” rated dance music: Roots Rock Reggae. The group revives reggae classics and casts other songs into deep reggae style, everything from “Stir It Up” to “Hotel California,” as well as originals such as “Want Some.” The tight band backs singers Palm Treez, Teki, Villami, and Noah. According to the band, Faya’s music is “about the roots sounds that unite us.”
